Harlyn Silverstein, Among the Best
We would like to share some very good news from our department that Harlyn Silverstein's story regarding his Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships that is posted on the UManitoba website. http://umanitoba.ca/about/374.html  This award clearly demonstrates the high standard of our education that we deliver to our students (Harlyn is an alumnus of our university and he did his B.,Sc. (Hons) thesis project in Dr. Doug Craig's lab) and also represents very a high standard of research of Chris' group. We are very fortunate to have Chris Wiebe in our faculty and his efforts to attract very talented students is commendable. Congratulations to Harlyn for winning this well deserved award.

NEW CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR IN ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY
 The University of Winnipeg is pleased to welcome Dr. Charles Wong as Canada Research Chair in Environmental Toxicology, an appointment that brings with it $100,000 annually for the next five years. Dr. Wong, who most recently worked at the University of Alberta, is cross-appointed in the Environmental Studies Program and the Department of Chemistry. He is specifically interested in emerging pollutants, including flame retardants, pharmaceuticals and breakdown products, about which little is known.

Dr. Athar Ata is this year's recipient of Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching. Athar Ata is an associate professor of chemistry at The University of Winnipeg, renowned for his energy and enthusiasm. Colleagues describe him as “the anchor of the chemistry program” at The University of Winnipeg. He has trained and mentored numerous students in his labs who have continued their academic success in research, published work and awards. A consummate researcher, Ata’s labs are known to engage, motivate and educate future chemists while instilling the highest education standards.
